Performance Optimization

The documentation system automatically applies multiple optimization techniques during the build process to ensure fast page loads.

Automatic Optimizations#

1. HTML Minification#

All HTML files are automatically minified:

  • Removes HTML comments
  • Strips unnecessary whitespace
  • Compresses whitespace between tags
  • Typical savings:30-40% file size reduction

2. CSS Minification#

Stylesheet files are minified:

  • Removes CSS comments
  • Eliminates unnecessary whitespace
  • Compacts whitespace around selectors and properties
  • Typical savings:20-35% file size reduction

3. JavaScript Minification#

Theme JavaScript files are minified:

  • Removes single and multi-line comments
  • Strips unnecessary whitespace
  • Collapses multiline code to single lines
  • Typical savings:15-25% file size reduction

4. Script Loading Optimization#

Non-critical scripts are optimized for loading:

  • Critical scripts (dark-mode,feedback) load immediately
  • Non-critical scripts use defer attribute
  • External library scripts use async attribute
  • Reduces blocking of page render

5. Asset Fingerprinting#

All assets receive content-hash fingerprints:

  • Enables aggressive caching (1 year)
  • Changes only when content changes
  • Example:styles.a1b2c3d4.css
  • Works with CDNs and caching layers

Build Output Statistics#

The build process displays optimization statistics:

Plaintext
⚡ Optimization Summary: HTML:2.5 MB → 1.6 MB (36% smaller) CSS:456 KB → 289 KB (37% smaller) JS:892 KB → 721 KB (19% smaller)

How It Works#

At Build Time#

  1. Minification — All assets are minified and compressed
  2. Fingerprinting — Content hashes are added to filenames
  3. Optimization — Script loading is optimized
  4. Statistics — Compression metrics are calculated and displayed

At Runtime#

  1. Deferred Loading — Non-critical scripts load after page render
  2. Async Loading — External libraries load asynchronously
  3. Lazy Loading — Images load only when needed
  4. Caching — Assets are cached by fingerprint hash

Performance Impact#

Page Load Time#

Typical improvements with all optimizations:

  • First Contentful Paint (FCP):30-40% faster
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP):25-35% faster
  • Total Page Size:30-40% smaller

Bandwidth Savings#

For a typical documentation site with 50 pages:

  • Before: ~150 MB
  • After: ~90-100 MB
  • Savings: 40-50 MB per complete site view

Cache Benefits#

With fingerprinting enabled:

  • Assets are cached for 1 year
  • Only changed assets are re-downloaded
  • Browser caches ~90% of assets on repeat visits

Configuration#

Optimizations are automatic and require no configuration. To see detailed stats:

Bash
npm run build

Watch the output for the "Optimization Summary"section.

Best Practices#

For Content Creators#

  1. Keep markdown readable — Minification handles compression
  2. Use descriptive headings — Improves SEO and readability
  3. Optimize images — Use modern formats (WebP,SVG)
  4. Link efficiently — Internal links cache better than external

For Deployers#

  1. Enable gzip compression — Further compress assets (5-10% additional)
  2. Use a CDN — Distribute from edge locations
  3. Set Cache-Control headers — Leverage fingerprinting for long-term caching
  4. Monitor Core Web Vitals — Track performance metrics

Advanced:Custom Minification#

The minifier can be used programmatically:

Javascript
import{minifyHTML,minifyCSS,minifyJS}from'./scripts/lib/minifier.js';const minifiedHTML = minifyHTML(htmlContent);const minifiedCSS = minifyCSS(cssContent);const minifiedJS = minifyJS(jsContent);

Lighthouse Performance#

Sites built with these optimizations typically score:

  • Performance: 90-98/100
  • Best Practices: 95-100/100
  • Accessibility: 90-100/100
  • SEO: 95-100/100

Troubleshooting#

If minification breaks something#

The minifier is conservative and rarely breaks code. If you encounter issues:

  1. Check browser console for errors
  2. Verify script logic in unminified source
  3. Report the issue with the problematic code

If pages load slowly#

  1. Check network tab in DevTools
  2. Look for render-blocking resources
  3. Enable gzip on your server
  4. Use a CDN for asset distribution

Note: These optimizations are automatic and transparent. No additional configuration is needed.
